Water damage cleanup is the process of removing water, contaminated materials, and biological hazards from a property and decontaminating what remains. It follows ANSI/IICRC S500 and includes water category classification, containment, extraction, disposal of unsalvageable porous materials, surface cleaning, antimicrobial treatment, and clearance verification.
Cleanup is the safety phase that comes before drying and reconstruction. For Category 2 and 3 events — including sewage backups and floodwater — full PPE, containment, and EPA-registered antimicrobials are required.
